Fallen Angels is wat mij betreft te onevenwichtig. De verwikkelingen op Caliban zijn best boeiend, maar de lotgevallen van de Dark Angels op de forge world zijn langdradig en vervelend... Een gemiste kans.
A Thousand Sons - Graham Mc Neill ***** Dit is het verhaal van de primarch Magnus en het 15e legioen Adeptus Astartes: Thousand Sons. Het begint met verbod van de Keizer om nog magie te gebruiken binnen het keizerrijk. Magnus en zijn legioen gaan in het geheim toch verder met de studie en het uitoefenen van deze verboden leer. Wanneer Magnus in een visioen het komende verraad van Horus ziet, wil hij, door gebruik te maken van magie, de Keizer verwittigen. Hij gelooft dat de ernst van het nieuws zijn ongehoorzaamheid zal kunnen verantwoorden. Niets is minder waar. De Keizer is woedend en stuurt het 6e legioen, Space Wolves onder leiding van de brute en wrede primarch Leman Russ, naar Prospero, thuisplaneet van de Thousand Sons. De Space Wolves hebben de opdracht om Magnus en zijn legioen te onderwerpen en in ongenade naar Terra te brengen om verantwoording af te leggen.
Dit mondt echter uit in een niets ontziende, bloedige en tragische strijd tussen de twee legioenen en hun primarchs, met dramatische gevolgen...
A Thousand Sons is niet alleen het meest lijvige volume van de reeks, maar ontegensprekelijk ook het beste, op magistrale wijze geschreven en verteld door Graham Mc Neill.
Nemesis - James Swallow ***** Nemesis biedt een blik op 'de oorlog achter de oorlog', de verborgen operaties ondernomen door de strijdende partijen. De oorlog duurt reeds twee jaar. Een geheime, keizelijke organisatie de 'Officio Assassinorum', plot een plan om de afvallige Horus te elimineren. Zes elite huurmoordenaars krijgen de opdracht om de Warmaster te executeren om zo een einde te brengen aan de oorlog.
Wat de organisatie echter niet weet, is dat Erebus, een van Horus' hoogst geplaatste officieren, het plan heeft uitgewerkt om een nemesis, een perfect 'moordwapen' in te zetten tegen de Keizer zelf...
Nemesis is een erg spannende en meeslepende thriller. Wel opvallend aan dit verhaal is de viscerale horror, die soms erg expliciet is.
'Fallen Angels' to me is to much unbalanced. The complications on Caliban are quit absorbing but the battles on the forge world are tedious and boring. A missed opportunity.
A thousand sons - Graham Mc Neill ***** This is the story of the primarch Magnus and the 15th legion Adeptus Astartes: Thousand Sons. It begins with the banning of sorcery from the empire by the Emperor. Magnus and his legion secretly continue to study and practice this forbidden lore. When Magnus learns through sorcery the impending betrayel of Horus, he tries, again through sorcery, to warn the Emperor, believing that the gravity of the news justifies his disobedience. But the Emperor is furious and orders the 6th legion, Space Wolves, and their cruel primarch Leman Russ to Prospero, the Thousand Sons' home planet. The Space Wolves must subdue Magnus and his legion and bring them to Terra to be judged.
This, however, becomes a brutal, bloody and tragic battle between the two legions and their primarchs, with dramatic consequences.
'A Thousans Sons' is not only the most sizeable, but also undeniably the best volume in the series, brilliantly written and told by Graham Mc Neill.
Nemesis - James Swallow ***** 'Nemesis' offers a look at 'the war behind the war', the covert operations undertaken by the opposing sides.
The war has been going on for two years. A secret, imperial organisation - the Officio Assassinorum -is plotting to eliminate Horus. Six elite assassins get the order to execute the Warmaster and thus end the war.
What the organisation doesn't know, is that Erebus, a high ranking officer of Horus, worked out the plan to field a nemesis weapon of his own: a highly specialized assassin, a perfect 'killing machine' to assassinate the Emperor...
'Nemesis is a stirring, suspenceful thriller. Striking to this story is the visceral horror, sometimes quit explicit.

De audioverhalen die ik gehoord heb, waren best spannend. De boeken spreken me toch nog altijd niet echt aan...
